Knowing how and what social media platform your audience uses is an important data point. Identifying this information will improve your level of engagement and your marketing efforts. And according to a new report from CenturyLinkQuote, platforms vary from state to state.

The data in this report is particularly important because people are spending more time on their smartphones accessing social media. According to a 2018 Nielsen report, adults in the United States spend nearly half a day interacting with the media. And social media takes up 45 minutes of those 11+ hours.

As a small business, you can optimize your social media marketing so you can squeeze your brand in those 45 minutes. And CenturyLink’s research is one of the many resources you can use to get there.

The importance of social media in business marketing

Social media is as relevant today as print, radio and television were in the past. But it provides more tools to interact and analyze how, where, and on what device consumers are engaging.

Whether you are a small business or a large enterprise, technology is essential in a digital ecosystem. Best of all, it’s an affordable/free solution that anyone can use to increase their brand awareness.

Creating a strong social media presence can communicate authority, show authenticity, and encourage engagement. The platform also allows small businesses to provide personalized customer support without the cost of call centers.

If properly optimized, social media will help you connect with your customers and increase leads and sales.

Most Popular Social Media Apps in Each State

In last year’s report, Google Plus was one of the most searched social media apps nationwide. So much so that it’s tied with Snapchat for the top spot.

The chart below shows 2018 data from CenturyLinkQuote.

CenturyLinkQuote said Google Plus didn’t even appear on the map this year. This could be related to the platform closing in August 2019.

Snapchat

With Google Plus out of the way, Snapchat took the top spot this year. It was by far the number one search in North Dakota, but it was also number one in 10 other states.

  • Arizona
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Michigan
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • Oklahoma
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

Snapchat reached the top spot even though it experienced slower growth in 2018.

pinterest

At number two, Pinterest was the top platform in 10 states. It was Montana’s first platform, but it also ranked first in Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, and Minnesota. The remaining five states are:

  • Missouri
  • New Hampshire
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Wyoming

Although Pinterest doesn’t grab headlines like other social media channels, the company has carved out a niche for itself with certain segments of the industry. Time will tell how Pinterest fares as the company just went public at $19 per share.

instagram

Instagram comes in at number three, as it beat its parent company Facebook and took its place last year. This year, he was number one in nine states.

California had the most Instagram-related searches this year. Some of the other states were Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, and Hawaii.

Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York rounded up the top states for Instagram.

Facebook

Facebook came in at number four. With 1.5 billion daily active users, it’s a very well-known brand, maybe that’s why it’s there. Users can just go directly to the site and not search for it like they do on other platforms.

Another issue may be the long list of scandals the company has faced over the past two years. But even with these issues, Facebook still has more users than any other platform.

In that report, Facebook was number one in eight states, with West Virginians searching for the app more than anyone else. The other top statuses for Facebook searches are:

  • Alabama
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Ohio
  • Caroline from the south
  • Tennessee

Reddit/Youtube

Tied for fifth place are two of the oldest platforms on the list. Reddit and YouTube are different from other social media channels, but they are hugely successful nonetheless.

As for Reddit, the community it creates around specific topics makes it a very popular destination for like-minded people.

People in Washington state have made Reddit the number one destination. But Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island and Virginia also favor the platform over others.

For YouTube, Mississippi residents listened the most to its site. However, residents of Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania have also made it their favorite destination.

Twitter

The fact that Twitter did not top searches in any of the states is surprising. Not surprisingly, he was number one in Washington D.C.

With President Trump using Twitter to communicate directly with the people, it’s somewhat fitting that he got the top spot at the center of the nation’s political center.

These are the number one apps in every state.

The future of social media

The GlobalWebIndex (PDF) indicates that nearly half of internet users follow a brand they like or are considering buying something on social media. And in most cases, the smartphone is the device of choice.

Brands on social media using images and videos will have more success connecting with users. Consumer behavior has changed.

According to Simon Kemp, global consultant at We Are Social, “With 4 billion people now online, we are already seeing new digital behaviors emerging. Keyboards will be replaced by voice commands and cameras. Visual content will dominate social media and messaging, and new technologies will provide richer digital experiences for people around the world. To keep up, brands need to rethink their strategies, develop new capabilities and adapt quickly. »

Having a strong social media presence is a good start.
