The pandemic has accelerated the use of social media apps for struggling small businesses – and it’s allowed them to forge meaningful connections and build brand awareness online.
According to social media expert Alisha Marfatia, 25, apps like Instagram and TikTok have taken center stage in brand building and are the most profitable ways to increase revenue and acquire new customers or subscribers.
“More small businesses have recently joined these social networking tools to interact with consumers and increase their income during the lockdown,” said Marfatia.
By launching her social media management business last year, Marfatia was forced to pivot and move to the online space.
“I lost all of my clients after the pandemic hit. Small businesses had to cut back on spending and marketing was the first thing to do, ”she says.
“But many realized that the only way to stand out was online, and I saw a change in the way they shared content and in their desire to learn.”
His company, Social impact, is a program focused on mentoring women entrepreneurs, offering support to grow their business using social media.
And his latest podcast, Build Your Brand, with NOVA Entertainment provides small business owners with tips and ideas for anyone looking to grow their online presence.
“No matter what happens, foreclosure has no impact on your online presence. If there’s a time to be online and grow your business, it’s now, ”she says.
Marfatia offers her best advice to create a strong brand on social networks.
EXPAND YOUR BRAND
As you grow your business online, it’s important to establish a consistent branding message, engage with your audience, analyze your competition, be patient, and don’t give up.
“The most common questions I get from business owners are that they don’t grow, don’t see results, or don’t know what they’re doing wrong on social media,” says Marfatia.
“It takes time to build a social audience. Find another account that has a like-minded audience and introduce yourself and discuss your product or service. It pays to have friends everywhere and eventually you will develop a lasting awareness.
Marfatia says authenticity is the key to compelling content.
“People are looking for authenticity and the means to connect. If they see someone running a small business online while homeschooling their kids, it will inspire them and help them connect.
For businesses that sell tangible products, visuals are essential. Make sure you describe your business, what it does, and share reviews.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
Marfatia says to choose the best network based on your business and your audience.
“If you provide professional services, LinkedIn is for you,” she says.
“If they’re middle-aged, start with Instagram, or if they’re older, jump on Facebook.
“Instagram showcases the best of your business and products, while TikTok only has enough video content for some businesses.
“A lot of homeowners blew up overnight because they posted a video that’s more powerful than a photo. Viewers can see how their product works firsthand.
The video content had helped Marfatia to increase the number of its subscribers from 8,000 to 52,000 in six months.
“Social media isn’t just a platform to sell, it’s a place to be social,” she says.
“If you’re going to get subscribers to buy your product, people are going to click that unsubscribe button.”
