The good times continue to roll for Facebook, as the tech giant announced another stellar quarter on Wednesday.
Thirteen years after its existence, the company is more dominant than ever. As this graph from Statista shows, Facebook runs four of the five most used social media and messaging services in the world. And it’s not really that close.
The fact that Facebook rules over these specific types of apps is significant, as social media platforms are particularly powerful for advertisers to target people’s interests as precisely as possible. Unsurprisingly, putting ads in front of those billions of eyes is how Facebook makes almost all of its money.
The company has warned that its revenue is expected to slow later this year, largely because it runs out of space to put ads in the main Facebook app’s News Feed. The company is now looking to bolster its advertising power on those other platforms, with Messenger the particular apple of Mark Zuckerberg’s eye.
Since these platforms are so huge, Facebook is already well positioned to do well. And for advertisers looking to reach the widest audience, the alternatives only look disappointing, for better or for worse.
