This live audio video chat social networking app made in India is part of the new wave of social media in India competing directly with Clubhouse.
While invitation-only social audio platform Clubhouse recently launched its Android app in India, the fame for acceptance of audio-specific social media has grown in India. Additionally, after the Indian government banned hundreds of Chinese apps in 2020, it focused on local apps that served as an alternative to Chinese apps. However, this has also shifted the focus to other applications made in India.

A live audio-video chat social network application, Leher, is a platform where people with similar interests can come together to discuss ideas, learn, network and build relationships.
Unlike Clubhouse, which is an audio-only chat app, Leher is an open audio-video chat platform and within the platform there are invite-only clubs. Some clubs are run by more exclusive people and some of these clubs allow people to join on request.
The technological panda spoke with Vikas Malpani, co-founder and CEO of Leher App, about Leher’s USP and why tech-savvy Indians are going for audio-video when it comes to social media.

“The last great wave of social media happened a decade ago, coinciding with the arrival of Snapchat and Instagram in the age of 3G. The whole medium of interaction via text is painful and has so far described social networks as broadcast networks, ”he says.
“The coming decade will be the mobile age, with a new social network built around audio and video that will focus on conversations rather than streaming. Many other apps are now exploring live audio-video arrangements, indicating that “social audio video” could be the next big frontier. This is the decade of transition to audio / video as the main means of socialization, ”he adds.
The startup firmly believes that as today’s social media app, Leher is better than Clubhouse.

The app also allows you to record the live chat and schedule a chat and stream accordingly. The time limit for a live video is approximately 180 minutes, and there is no time limit for club sessions.
“There is no limit to who joins a club on the Lehar app,” he says proudly. Malpani is a second founder, having co-founded CommonFloor.com in 2007, which was acquired by Quikr.com in 2016.
Indian youth and IT crowd go for social audio video
A look at the demographics of the Leher app indicates that today’s youth as well as the IT crowd prefer social audio video. Malpani informs that they are seeing young professionals, college graduates, project managers and industry thought leaders using their platform.
According to the startup, its current user base of 300,000 people spends between 15 minutes and two hours on the app, chatting and debating with like-minded people. The app observed discussions on a variety of topics including mental health, startups, investing, and journalism.

Geographically, while Leher enjoys major appeal in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, Tier II cities are catching up with this new trend in cities like Agra, Ghaziabad, Ajmer, Bhopal and Chandigarh.
Malpani says the reason for the increase is that the video adds to Leher’s experience.
“While audio is good for conversation, video is great for connecting. Users like to see the people behind the voice, sometimes they like to show the environment, others want to have a heated discussion and seeing people helps you understand the other’s point of view better. This way the community has a platform for their regular catch-ups and events / meetings, ”he says.

Leher also raised an undisclosed amount from a group of angel investors and a seed investment from a seed fund.
The Leher Creator program
Recently, Leher launched a Creative Program, allowing moderators and creators in the community to live out their dream of becoming influencers. The platform focuses on adding to the traditional way of supporting creators with brand collaborations with direct support and appreciation by monetizing their active participation on the app.
