How Older and Younger Bollywood Celebrities Use Social Media Apps Differently

Social media, for celebrities, is an essential brand building tool in today’s world. From movie ads to wedding photos, it’s a platform to ensure audiences are in touch with a star’s “true” side. Dedicated marketing managers are hired by celebrity management teams to establish a more comprehensive understanding of celebrity at your fingertips.

However, social media apps like Instagram and Twitter are extremely used in different ways by celebrities from different generations. Is there a reason for this? And how different are their approaches to social media from each other? We take a look.

Gen Z celebrities and their Instagram feeds

A prominent trend among young influencers is the need to maintain an organized Insta feed. Images filtered to a specific tone, adding quote images, framing photos – there’s something for everyone.

For Gen Z celebrities like Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday and Sara Ali Khan, social media isn’t just a way to keep in touch with fans, it’s a wide range of couture outfits, luxurious vacations and of starry moments to which we would like to be able to identify.

Another interesting point to note for this group of movie stars is their ability to fully assess the platform – using Instagram for paid promotions, posting in collaboration with other users, uploading reels, among others. They are more in tune with the kind of potential these social media platforms have and seem to use them more holistically.

Since these stars grew up with the internet, perhaps it comes more naturally to them. Younger generations have barely seen a world without digital, with access to the World Wide Web at the click of a button. They are unaware of the difficulties of the dial-up era or what it means to chat on the landline for hours on end. They are digital savvy creators who really know the platform.

A millennial state of mind?

For the generation just above, the way these social media apps are used is quite different. A quick glance at Kareena Kapoor Khan or Deepika Padukone’s Instagram page would reveal the same gorgeous outfit photos and ads, but with far less curation. They don’t mind posting ugly selfies, unfiltered photos, and posting to the grid for a friend’s birthday.

It’s also worth observing that while these movie stars may still use Instagram and Twitter to post about their collaborations with the brand, they don’t seem to take it as seriously as their younger counterparts. Several actors in this group have often expressed their disinterest in social media – Katrina Kaif, Kareena and a few others chose to join only a few years ago. Stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan always keep their distance.

This reveals a less serious attitude towards social media in general. In an interview with bollywood speech bubble in 2021, Saif shared, “I don’t read (troll comments). I’m sick of it and it’s really cool. Because it also helps me to concentrate. It can get addicting, you know. I can google myself and start checking what I said when I read something I don’t like and it spoils my mood.

Not just him, other actors of his generation have also expressed similar views on the frivolity of social media. This can be attributed to their fame and stardom that came before the dawn of the internet. Back when movie magazines, newspaper gossip columns and star-studded first red carpets were the only avenue for fans, movie stars enjoyed fame without having to maintain an ever-growing base of subscribers. aware of their every move. This could be the main reason why older movie stars don’t engage with the platform as vigorously as younger stars.

The unifying factor

With the existence of both sides of the social media strategy, the uniting factor for the two groups of famous users is the continuous trolling. With the percolation of social media into our daily lives, celebrities are always exposed to anonymous haters who don’t hold back from their intrusive trigger comments.

From Janhvi to Sara, Kareena to Deepika – all have spoken on different occasions about the impact of such constant hatred. While many chose to remain indifferent, others revealed their struggle to keep it all positive.

The final score

A close inspection of the Instagram pages of the two types of celebrities will most likely reveal a difference in aesthetics and usage of social media in general. While the reasons may be due to differences in how they embraced the internet, the gap widens with the age gap.
