The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic led to strict confinement. Adherence to social distancing has led to increased activity and participation on social media platforms. Social media applications have also come of age and become an effective way to support the endeavors put in place by mankind.

Players in the field of social media have made efforts on their part to provide relevant information to millions of people. Here’s a look at some of the world’s leading social media apps that have helped bolster the fight against the novel coronavirus:


Social media giant Facebook has launched a dedicated “Coronavirus (Covid-19) Information Center”, which claims to provide “all information” about the pandemic “in one place”. The Facebook Information Center has updates from health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, advice to keep us and our people around us and resources that can come to our aid in any eventuality.

Apart from dining links and information from government offices/ministries and other authorities, Facebook also helps people find “ways to stay at home”. The platform further supports the WHO to raise funds for this purpose.


The microblogging site is focused on providing its users with country-specific information about the pandemic. In its attempt to control fake news, Twitter offers an option to directly surf tweets from Indian authorities, including the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Even before logging in, Twitterati can skip to the “Covid-19 LIVE” section. At the top is a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation announcing the extension of the nationwide lockdown until May 3.

Other Twitter handles that have been included in the list are authorities such as National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), public broadcaster All India Radio News, all Union Cabinet Ministers and representatives of different state governments. Emphasis is also placed on the promotion of hashtags by authorities, including the WHO.


The photo/video sharing app has focused on promoting social distancing and self-isolation. One of the most notable steps taken by the app is to ban the search for Covid-19 AR effects, as it demonstrates the seriousness of Instagram’s approach to the matter. Notably, Instagram had faced the wrath of many early on for the same. The app has also changed its algorithm to ensure that Covid-19 news from relevant sources appears at the top of its feed. These sources include the WHO and the Ministries of Health of different countries. Also, the app encourages its users to stay at home, and to this end, they have rolled out stay-at-home stickers and introduced a tool to browse Instagram with friends via video chat.

The short video platform has taken several initiatives to raise awareness about the new virus, starting with the launch of a dashboard powered by data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization. health (WHO).
