People love to use face filters on many apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat to make their photos more beautiful, fun, and charming. This trend was especially accentuated during the lockdown situation, when people were spending more time on social media platforms. However, the main problem with the Glow Look filter on TikTok is that it doesn’t really suit people of color. As this filter works according to Eurocentric beauty standards, a Vietnamese woman recently tried this filter on her face and she actually expected this filter to make her face look more realistic and beautiful. When she saw his face, it had totally changed with bright blue eyes, flushed cheeks and a thinner nose. She laughed at her own face because she looked ridiculous.

The women understood by noticing two categories of videos using this filter, in the first cohort there are women with white faces who were promised by their own heat, and in the second cohort there are women of color who are dissatisfied because this filter does not really apply to their faces. A creator who creates content on Desi lifestyle and culture said that beauty filters on social platforms try to make facial features of people according to European beauty standards. This is absolutely not a good option for people who do not meet these European standards.

These light filters only work well on faces that already follow European beauty standards. When you apply these filters on non-Eurocentric features, the hyperrealistic effect becomes laughable. People have applied this ‘Glow Look’ filter on over three million videos but unfortunately the wonder is not isolated from the platform. The Facebook-owned Instagram beauty filter has also been applied to more than 143,000 Reels content. The main problem is that not all the population can apply such filters on their face because these filters apply the enthusiastic European features, such as clear eyes, thinner nose and fair skin color.

In a blog post, the executive of the AR effect of the platform did not disclose the formation of these facial filters. The report states that these face filters work on deep learning, in which the computer learns to identify the person’s real faces from their photos. If TikTok’s Glow filter works with a similar process, it is the platform’s duty to train their computer to work on a diverse collection of faces.

There is no doubt that people use filters to make their faces attractive and eye-catching, but when these filters don’t work on colored faces, it’s disappointing. However, the problem is not with facial features, but rather with the problem of societal values ​​and technical design. The team that creates these filters is responsible for such a bad creation.
